| Scope and content |
In his memoir, From reveille to retreat (1935), Helmick describes his military career. Topics include a description of West Point, his impression of military training, attitudes of white cadets toward African American classmates, and social life at Forts Spokane and Reno. For the Spanish-American War period, Helmick discusses public reaction to the MAINE sinking, hostility among the three branches of the service, and malaria and yellow fever epidemics. He describes his time in Cuba during the Spanish-American War; the Philippines, especially the campaign during the Moro rebellion; and Alaska, where he describes mining operations, weather conditions, and missionary activities. He also compares Germany's military training with that in the United States. Other topics include the organization of the army, border control in Texas, the unpreparedness of the Army prior to World War I, political hostility between President Wilson and General Leonard Wood, Armistice Day, the importance of various welfare organizations, role of women during World War I, and the President's tour of Brest. Collection also contains Helmick's professional papers and lectures concerning military instruction, conflict among the branches of service, the psychology of leadership, communist threat during the 1920s, and a history of the Inspector General's department. |

| Biographical note | Eli Alvo Helmick (1863-1945), a native of Quaker Point, Ind., graduated from West Point in 1888. During his military career, he participated in the Wounded Knee Campaign; was inspector of the Rural Guard at Santiago, Cuba; participated in the campaign against the Moro Indians in the Philippines; served in the Inspector General's office in Chicago; commanded the 27th Infantry on border patrol in Mexico; was commander of the 5th Division in France (1918); and after World War I, was appointed Inspector General. He served as Inspector General until his retirement in 1927. |
